Student of the Week – Eric Rome October 5, 2007

This week’s student of the week is football player Eric Rome. Currently a senior at St. John High School, Rome is an amazing football player and an outstanding student in his academics. He takes two math classes, which is hard for any one to juggle but not for Rome. He still finds the time to study to achieve good grades and also practice to be the best of the best in football.
Rome is not only a football player and an excellent student, but he finds the time to be in the 4-H club as well. He works very hard in his academics and in his extracurricular activities. He works very hard out side of school as he does inside of school. Rome still finds ways to help people achieve the goals that he has being a study buddy. When Rome was asked about helping others who are less fortunate than him in the studying department he said “It makes me feel like a better person when I can help others and I also hope that I can inspire others to do the same as well. It is a great experience to share your talent with others.”
Eric Rome is an excellent example of what St. John spirit is all about. He tries his best in every thing that he does and also gives one hundred and ten percent every step of the way. Now lets see if next week’s student of the week can top this excellent academic and extracurricular achiever!

The Metroid System
In 1986, the first game of the Metroid series, Metroid, has appeared. In this game, Samus Aran, and for clarification, she is a woman, is a bounty hunter who sworn to protect the galaxy. Ever since this game has made it out, many new sequels and special appearances has made her famous. Samus, along with her Power Suit, Power Beam, and many other weapons has helped her complete many missions.
There are many games that she stars in. The first game, Metroid (NES), is where she makes her debut. Her first known mission is to travel to the planet Zebus, and destroy the Mother Brain, an evil brain that made quite a few appearances. The next game is Metroid 2: Return of Samus (Game Boy). Here, she must rid of many Metroids. Metroids are flowing, small, alien-like creatures that suck health from other creatures. These creatures are so well known and so popular, they made an appearance in EVERY Metroid game.
Third, Super Metroid (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) is when Samus returns to Zebus to rid of Mother Brain again, but this time with more bosses. Fourth, Metroid Fusion (Game Boy Advance) is kind of a huge life changer for Samus. Here, she was infected with floating bacteria, and with the help of a vaccine cure, thanks to a child Metroid from Metroid 2, she became better, and with her power suit taken my SA-X, a mysterious bacteria with strange powers, she must gear up and stop this thing before it’s too late. In Metroid Zero Mission (GBA), she must stop Mother Brain for the 3rd time. This game is like an updated version of the first Metroid, and you can play the first Metroid game here.
Her latest missions are from the Metroid Prime Series. In the first Prime (Nintendo Gamecube), she discovers Space Pirates, evil alien creatures of many kinds that created the actual Metroids. In the first game, she must stop the Space Pirates’ plan to take over the galaxy. In Prime 2 (GCN), in a world called Aether, a powerful darkness has made 2 words for Aether, including Dark Aether. Samus must destroy Dark Aether by reclaiming the energy from Dark Aether that they saw. She must also rid of Dark Samus, an opposite Samus created in the moment Samus set foot on Aether. In Prime Hunters (Nintendo DS), a magical energy source of infinite power has been revealed to be the greatest in the universe. Samus must find this power source first, before the other hunters do. Samus must stop the Space Pirates once and for all in Prime 3 (Wii).
There are other games she is in as well. In Metroid Prime Pinball (NDS) you play as Samus as a pinball. Use her powers to complete each stage and get an amazing high score. She also appeared in the 2 Super Smash Bros. games (Nintendo 64+GCN).
There are many powers she collects along the way. Her Missiles are her second most used weapon. Her Morph Ball mode makes her into a form of a ball and get through passages, with her Ball Bombs. The Power bombs has a huge explosion that destroys lots of enemies, the Spider Ball allows her to travel in directions through walls, and her Boost Ball gives her a speed boost, that can also get her up through ramps. In Addition to her Missiles, she has the Super Missiles, more powerful versions, the Seeker Missiles, up to five, 100% accurate missiles in one shot, and Ice Missiles, Missiles with the power to freeze enemies. She has lots of beams too. She has the spreading Wave Beam, the freezing Ice Beam, the burning and piercing Plasma Beam, the Dark, Light, and Annihilator (Sound) Beams, and the indestructible Phazon Beam. She has many suits, including the Varia Suit, heat and cold resistant suit, and quite a few visors (like the Scan Visor, allowing her to show and scan for information on just about anything). Finally, there other powerups, like the Hi-Jump Boots, the Jump Ball, the Space Jump (unlimited spinning jumps), and the Screw Attack (a super destructive Spin jump, that also appeared as an item in SSBM (Super Smash Bros. Melee).
There are so many good things about Samus, and so many awesome powerups. But, it would be nice if she took off her suit to see what she looks like as a human, wouldn’t it? Yep, Samus is one heck of a lady. She is AWESOME!!!

School without seniors October 5, 2007

As you all know the seniors were not at school Monday. We left for retreat Saturday and did not return until Monday afternoon. The school day Monday was almost over so Mr. Legrange sent us home. As a senior class we can get a little loud and crazy sometimes. My question to the school is, what was is it like without us for a day? Where the halls quieter? Were some of the classes smoother?
I asked some people around the school. Their answers were basically the same. It was quieter. It felt empty. The teachers thought the same thing but the missed our presence. I’m sure that the freshmen liked the lunch situation though. It is not everyday that they don’t have to wait for the seniors.

Eagle Football Back on Track with Riverside Game October 5, 2007

Last Friday night, the St. John Eagles traveled to Reserve, Louisiana to the Riverside Academy Rebels. The Rebels are a traditionally great football program and started the season off to a undefeated record of 4-0. Going into the game the Eagles were held a 3-1 record with only one defeat coming from the Braves of H.L. Bourgeois, a class 5-A team out of Houma, Louisiana. The game against the undefeated Rebels proved to be no test to the Eagles as they got back on track of the winning tradition at St. John High School. The Eagles played their best game of the season, cleaning house against the Rebels, winning 47-26. The Eagles went into the game with an entirely new offense. Now running the spread offense led by quarterback Galen Johnson, the Eagles looked to throw the ball more to help them have a better chance at winning ball games, which proved to be the correct solution. Johnson, Rodarrick Jones, and Shelby Hemenway are key starters for the Eagle offense who haven’t seen much playing time on offense in the past three games. The starting roles were repossessed and it proved to be a difference maker. Trent Willis, a key wide receiver for Johnson, also had a fantastic game against the Rebels and proved to be a difference maker for the Eagle offense with his sixty plus yard touchdown reception.
The Eagle defense did a great job defending the Rebels, allowing Johnson’s spread offense to blow the game out of reach for the Rebels. The defensive lineman did a great job getting off the ball and into the Rebel backfield preventing them from closing in on the Eagle lead. James Barker, the Eagle punter, also played a key role in the game, giving the Rebel offense bad field position when the Eagle offense was unsuccessful.
Overall the Eagles put on a terrific performance and showed the town of Plaquemine what they were made of.

KENTWOOD GAME October 5, 2007

Tonight the St. John Eagles play the Kentwood Kangaroos. The Kangaroos are number one in single-A football. The Eagles just got back in the Top Ten from last week’s victory over Riverside Academy. The Eagles will be coming into tonight’s game on a four game winning streak, so they are not planning on losing tonight.
This game is a rematch of the 1998 Superdome game. It looks like history is repeating itself. We were too young to remember what happened at that game. The Eagles will be playing for the town tonight, and for the 1998 St. John Football Team. The Eagles really feel like they have Kentwood’s number this year, and is ready to play them. This will be great revenge if the Eagles can pull off the victory.
This game is the talk of the town. The entire Plaquemine community will probably be at the game. Senior Linebacker Rodarrick Jones stated, “I’m feeling good about the game tonight and I’m hoping for a win, so that the whole 2-A class in the state of Louisiana will start respecting the St. John Eagle Football Team.”
This is a game everybody will be talking about for a long time. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Eagles upset the Kangaroos tonight, and then everybody in the State will know that the Eagles are for real. Whatever your plans are for the evening, be sure to include going to see the Eagles play. Be there when the Eagles bring home the victory. Eagles, your fans are behind you 100%. Go Eagles!!

Future classes at SJH October 5, 2007

St. John High School, though very set on developing students spiritually, does not have any interesting classes. Many of its students would love to learn about more than just the basics, they want more. “I think we could use a class on Home Economics,” says Anonymous. Many other people also think we should have a class for Home Economics, and there are many other suggestions too. Some students believe we should have classes based on electronics, there assembling, their parts, and how to repair them. “I would mind having a class on Electronics” says anonymous. We could also try and have more classes that are far out there such as cooking classes, martial arts classes, auto maintenance, and much more. We could have classes on digital art, hunting, or survival skills.
Another suggestion is that we could have more clubs, sometimes it may be too complicated to have an entire class based on a certain subject. This is why we should be open to more clubs, this way students could learn what they want without messing up their school credits. These clubs would probably help to fulfill the wants of many students. This would also be a great way to have more people become involved in their school, being that most clubs are involved in after school activities. These clubs could also train students for their future jobs. And it would give many of our unnoticed students a chance to become known, just because they joined a club.
Sometimes there may not be enough teachers to sponsor every class or club, which is why we could begin to allow outside people, such as our community help to sponsor these clubs. This would be a great form of community service for anyone willing to do so, almost like substituting for a class during a teacher’s absence. “I wish we could have a class on welding” says anonymous. This would be far to much to do during school, it would require too much attention, and should be done after school as a club, this way there would be more attention focused on the activity. Attention also wouldn’t be focused on minor problems such as unfinished homework, projects, or talking due to boredom. Another suggestion for these classes would be to have them taught by one of the elementary or middle school teachers, like Art for example.
All of these clubs, classes, and other groups would help to make the school a very interesting place, or at least somewhat less dull. “School would probably be better with a couple of new classes’ next year.” says anonymous. Ideas for new classes include Home Economics, Photography, Welding, Woodshop, Auto Maintenance, Hunting, Boating, Survival Skills, Cooking, Electronics, French, German, Japanese, Game Design, and there are many more suggestions. This would probably be very hard to pull off seeing as how most of the public schools, that have these extra opinions, receive funding from the state. St. John is a private school, and is not entirely paid for by the state so these additional classes would be unlikely added to the list any time soon. Our school also has a set number of credits required to graduate, which would make the issues even more complicated. Other problems would involve lesson plans, selecting the best teacher for the class, a homeroom; there are too many other problems that would occur. Too many people would want to take these classes to make their senior year easier, and it would go straight down hill. It is very possible though, the school would just need to sponsor a event or do something to raise money to improve on the total number of classes and teachers it has. Maybe in the near future these classes will become available.

As we already well know, the new Evangeline 2007 as been crowned. Corrine Reeves, Miss Evangeline,
along with her 14 princesses are to be honored this weekend for their accomplishments and admittance onto the court. A special Acadian Festival mass will be held on Saturday, followed by the arrival of Miss Evangeline and her princesses on the bayou via canoe. Princess Jessica Harrell admits, “I am scared that I might fall out of the canoe! I would hate to ruin my outift and be drenched for the remainder of the day”. Princess Susie LeJeune had similar ideas, “If I either fall or get pushed out of the canoe I will be disappointed. I really want the night to special. Honestly, I’m not sure anything could ruin it, not even the rain!”
Immediately after the water ceremony, Reeves will be officially crowned Evangeline 2007 by former Evangeline, Erin Francise. A reception is planned to be held at the Carl F. Grant Civic Center and is open to the public. Each princess has her own table, so come with a big appetite! A formal dance will begin at 9 PM and end around 12 am. “I sure hope I can manage to stay up and not doze off!”, said Susie Lejeune.
Saturday will be a big night, not just for the Indian Princess court, but the Knights of Columbus as well. I’m sure as much attendance as possible will be greatly appreciated. Come and show your support for our Knights of Columbus and this special event that has been and will continue to be a rich part of our parish and state tradition.

This week, Mr. Fagnant’s senior religion morality classes are watching “Super Size Me,” a documentary made by Morgan Spurlock. An independent film maker, Spurlock decided to create a documentary in which he would eat only McDonald’s food for 30 days—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—and he had to sample every food item on the menu at least once. When asked by a McDonald’s employee if he wanted to Super Size his order, he would answer yes. Throughout the month, Spurlock was followed by a camera as he stuck to his McDonald’s diet, or “McDiet.” In addition, he scheduled regular appointments with three different specialist doctors, including a nutritionist, to keep track of his health.
Spurlock started out healthy for his age, 185.5 pounds at 6-foot-2. However, by the end of the month, he had gained24.5 pounds from his McDiet. Not only was his health affected by the high amounts of calories, fat, sugar, and caffeine he consumed, but there were also changes in his moods.
Spurlock’s decision to create “Super Size Me” was influenced by the fast-growing obesity epidemic in America and by a lawsuit filed against. Though the lawsuit—filed on behalf of two teenage girls who claimed that McDonald’s had significantly contributed to their size—failed, the documentary has succeeded in enlightening many on the connection between fast food and weight gain. So many of us eat fast food on a regular basis without stopping to think twice, because it’s convenient and it tastes good. However, as “Super Size Me” clearly suggests, if we don’t slow down on the fast food, America will remain the most obese country in the world.

Study buddy program October 5, 2007
Posted by susiel in News.add a comment
Just recently, St. John High School decided to try a new system out. They introduced the study buddy program to the students as a way to encourage the students to make better grades. They can ask for help in a class or two and they help find another student with good grades in that class. Once they find a student to help another, they look at their grades and find a goal for the two to reach. If the two students reach the goal that has been set for them, they get to choose a reasonable prize or reward for their work.
Mrs. Schlatre has been letting the students come in at their break or lunch to find a goal for the two students. This is a great way to encourage students in three ways. First, it teaches them to help other students and classmates. Second it is a rewarding way to make better grade. Third, it teaches them that if you have a goal, it can be reached, no matter how hard it is. Anything is possible if we believe in ourselves and we have the support of others.
The students might have more fun with their work by using the study buddy program, because they get to work with some one other than just themselves. Some people work better with others because they can help each other remember information from class. They can make little sayings to help them remember important facts.
I asked some students what they thought about the study buddy program, and they think it is great. If we are encouraged to do something it will help us to reach that goal. It can be stressful to have bad grades, but some people just need that extra push to get the grades. Everyone is capable of making good grades, but they just don’t believe in themselves. I have a study buddy and I have almost helped them reach their goal already.
