Labor Day is the first Monday of every September. It was created for the social and economic achievement of American workers. It was first started by Matthew Maguire in 1882 by the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, New Jersey. The first Labor Day was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City. Then in 1884 it was celebrated on the first Monday of September. In 1885, it was celebrated in many industrial centers around the country. The first Labor Day was celebrated by a parade by the Knights of Labor in New York City, and was made an official holiday by President Grover Cleveland when he signed the bill in 1894.

Today, many events are held to celebrate Labor Day or Labor Day weekend. These include parades, fairs, and family get-togethers. I interviewed Jessica Landry and asked what she and her family did to celebrate Labor Day and she said, “For Labor Day, I went to the Shrimp and Petroleum Festival in Morgan City, and I also went to my Granny’s camp and spent time with my family.” The Shrimp and Petroleum Festival has people that come from all around the United States to sell things. It also includes rides for kids, food, games, and music. And of course the main reason why all kids love Labor Day is because they get Monday off, which means NO SCHOOL!!
