Those of us who have been born and raised in Plaquemine know that with October comes the Acadian Festival and Parade. Started in 1969 by the Knights of Columbus, the Acadian Festival’s purpose is to honor our ancestors who rebuilt their lives here after being expelled from Nova Scotia by the British. It has since become a tradition looked forward to by natives of Plaquemine.

There are many things to do this weekend. It is Labor Day weekend, and most parents don’t have work on Monday. There is a St. John away football game on Friday, and the movie “Halloween” is coming out on August 31. It would be difficult to have a boring and uneventful weekend.

People this year are wondering if we will have a debate team. When asked if we will have one, and if he will be the sponsor, Nick Fagnant said that we hopefully will have one, but it’s up to the students to go to him and decide what all it would be about. He added that he would be happy to be the sponsor; actually he is looking forward to it. Fagnant was also asked when the first meeting would be; he said that it was not yet decided, and the students still have not come up with what they want to do. The debate team will be open to anyone who wants to join, if everyone can take it seriously.

Many college students, faculty, and fans of Louisiana State University have been crushed since the death of their mascot Mike V in May of this year due to renal failure. Following the heartbreaking news, staff at LSU has been searching in desperate hope to find a replacement for the beloved tiger. After months of searching, David Baker, Mike the Tiger’s primary veterinarian, announced that a replacement has been found. Two-year-old Roscoe, born at Great Cats of Indiana in Idaville, Indiana, is being trained at this very moment. He is expected to train for at least two weeks before setting paw on the LSU football field. These two weeks also serve as a quarantine or “acclamation” period, for health and safety precautions. This seems only necessary before the tiger is officially given the title of Mike VI.
Roscoe is a Bengal-Siberian mix currently weighing in at around 300 pounds. Within the next seven years, Roscoe is expected to weigh around 700 pounds. This extreme weight gain would make him LSU’s largest tiger ever.

What Makes a Miracle?
If you look up miracle in the dictionary, you will find that the definition is “an event that appears unexplainable by the laws of nature and so is held to be supernatural in origin or an act of God.” A miracle is something that happens by chance. People who understand what a miracle is can tell you that they happen every single day of your life. Every day that you wake up and get out of bed in the morning is a miracle. I really wish that I could just understand what a miracle is and why they happen but I guess I will never know.
